Do It Yourself (DIY) can work if you have Time, Interest & Discipline. You need time to research & analyse. Time to read good books on investing & finance. Time to analyse various mutual fund types, schemes & data available. Only then you can develop an strategy that is personalized to your situation and financial goals.
You also need to consider the opportunity cost of your own time. Could you be spending the time in another way that’s more fulfilling and enriching to your life? Could you be spending it with family or friends? Could you be spending time on things that will further your career?
Also you need to be passionate about understanding investing & finance. Without deep Interest in the subject, it’s difficult to retain knowledge. It’s difficult to stick to a long term investment plan if you don’t understand the logic or reasoning behind it.
Long term investing also requires lots of Discipline. Markets would be volatile, investments would go up and down and you will constantly be bombarded with scary headlines. Investing is not just about intelligence but also about emotions. Would you be able to override your emotions, think rationally and stick to your original plans? Average investor under perform even market returns due to poor financial decisions.
When it comes to self managing your financial investments, the key is to be honest with yourself. If you have what it takes, you have the opportunity to save lot of money over time by doing it yourself (assuming you do as well as a professional). With investing, however, the cost of making a mistake is enormously high, regardless of your portfolio size. The stakes are high. If you have any doubts about whether you possess the ingredients to success, the value you receive from a skilled professional will far outweigh the added cost.
